Parking will soon be restricted in a narrow Harrisdale street that became a major thoroughfare due to nearby roadworks.
Lauraine Drive in central Harrisdale is a 350-metre connection between Reilly and Wright roads.
The City of Armadale said it had received complaints from residents on two matters relating to the street: that its unprotected roadside footpath was in dangerous proximity to a sharp corner and that cars parked outside houses created an unnecessary danger to motorists and pedestrians.
At the July 10 council meeting the city voted unanimously to install separation curbs alongside the footpath on the outside of the road and a yellow No Parking line to be painted along the inside.
A resident who contacted Examiner Newspapers who wished to remain anonymous said when the nearby Reilly Road was opened three years ago traffic on the street skyrocketed.
They said cars entering Harrisdale from Nicholson Road would use the small suburban road as the shortest route into the neighbourhood.
Added onto the issue was a roadside footpath that was not elevated from the tarmac and had only flexible reflective bollards to protect walkers.
They also said they would like to have seen more planning from the city like moving the footpath further from the roadside and installing roadside parking bays.
Councillor Michelle Silver supported installing the safety measures and said she had first-hand experience of the potential danger of the area.
“I travel down that road frequently,” she said.
“It’s too much of a sharp bend, I’ve nearly had an accident and so has my partner so I believe it’s for the better of the whole community.”
Councillor Carol Frost also said she was aware of safety concerns but wanted to trial any changes and then consult residents before making permanent changes.
Ms Frost’s attempt to make the installation of curbs a six-month trial did not carry.
On the original motion the council voted unanimously in favour.
Bollards and a painted line were expected to be introduced in coming weeks.
