The start of a youth training facility in Cardup by engineering company Wormall Civil last September has proved to be a success with the first group of students having finished their Certificate II in civil construction a few weeks ago.

Two students have been employed on traineeships, another two have gained full time employment with Wormall Civil and others have been offered full time employment at the end of their studies.

A second group of students from schools in the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale have started the training program this year and will be granted the same opportunities to achieve a career within the civil construction industry.

Byford resident and student Josh Harman, 16, said he was interested in the civil engineering industry.

“In the beginning it was difficult to get the hang of it,” he said.

“But it’s a good program and you get a lot of experience from it.”

Josh said although he was unsure about his future plans he had learnt about sub-soil drainage, machine operating, earth works and shaping up subdivisions, which has given him invaluable insight and experience.

Cardup resident Tyron Chiffey, 18, said the program was great.

“It has given me a job as a full-time labourer,” he said.

“I have learnt a lot, it’s a great program and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is interested in this kind of work.”

Wormall Civil trainer Dean Richter said this was the first time the company had set up the youth training facility.

“The students have met our expectations,” he said.

“I feel really proud being part of this.”
