Tough issues drive tour

Federal Member for Canning Andrew Hastie meets with assistant minister for cities Angus Taylor and Serpentine Jarrahdale Shire president John Erren to discuss infrastructure.

A former SAS solider Federal Member for Canning Andrew Hastie has embarked on a different kind of tour of duty travelling through his electorate and holding a number of forums and meetings with residents.

Since April Mr Hastie has held 20 public community meetings.

In July he visited Serpentine, Jarrahdale, Mundijong, Oakford, Byford, Roleystone and Pickering Brook.

Mr Hastie said residents have shared different concerns with him on both local and national issues.

“What I hear most frequently is the need for more investment in infrastructure especially roads, rail and telecommunications,” he said.

Mr Hastie also said the other issues raised included fixing WA’s share of the GST and concerns about borders and national security.

In light of an alleged terror plot to blow up an airplane, which had been foiled in Sydney last week, Mr Hastie said Australians should be thankful for the actions taken by ASIO and AFP to keep citizens safe.

“This is why border security, stronger citizenship laws and a tough-minded approach to national security are a necessity,” he said.

By the end of the year Mr Hastie would have completed more than 30 public meetings.

He has also used the time to visit local businesses, organisations, schools, residents and council members.

Mr Hastie said the response to his meetings had been a positive one.
