Women’s football is taking off in Perth’s southeast suburbs and club organisers say it has helped develop more than just ball skills.
After a season of carnivals and social matches Forrestdale Fillies women’s team coach Ash Newbey said his players had developed across the board in 2017.
He said by the end of the season on-field performances were much improved but more importantly the competition had helped create something after the siren too.
“On the social side of things they really pulled together and will hang out outside of games,” he said.
“It’s really grown even on a personal level.
“At the end of the day seeing friendships grow throughout the year was awesome.”
The popularity of women’s football has exploded in Australia in recent years especially since the launch of the AFL Women’s League in 2017.
Mr Newbey said the level of interest in Armadale for female versions of traditionally male sports had grown with that.
With the 2018 season fast approaching and training already underway Mr Newbey said women of any skill level were still welcome to give the sport a try.
The Forrestdale Football Club will host a registration day for men and women on February 11 and Mr Newbey said there were still plenty of spaces to fill for all squads.
“I’d just like anyone to turn up,” he said.
“I’m sure we can fit them in.”
The club was looking for men and women 16-years and older.
