The widening of Armadale Road has begun with Premier Mark McGowan, Transport Minister Rita Saffioti and Federal Minister for Urban Infrastructure Paul Fletcher officially starting the $145 million project on March 7.

The upgrade, which would turn about seven kilometres of Armadale Road between Anstey and Tapper roads into a dual carriageway will also see the development of roundabouts at the Nicholson, Wright and Liddelow road intersections.

At the Nicholson Road intersection an east-west overpass was planned to go across the roundabout.

More than 27,000 cars use the road every day and Mr McGowan promised the upgrades would alleviate local traffic issues and create 850 jobs.

“This part of Perth has grown massively and there’s enormous numbers of people moving in here and a whole range of businesses,” he said.

“This road is just not coping and this 6.9-kilometre dual carriageway will ensure traffic can get through here far more efficiently and alleviate all the stop-start traffic congestion.”

A shared pedestrian and cyclist path would also be built on the northern side of Armadale Road and in February the City of Armadale said an underpass near William Skeet Oval was being considered for native animals to cross between bushland on either side of the dual carriageway.

The works were expected to be completed by late 2019.

The Nicholson Road traffic lights will be replaced by a roundabout and overpass.

The Wright Road intersection will be replaced by a roundabout.

The Liddelow Road intersection will be replaced with a roundabout.
