More than 300 people attended the Southern River Community Garden open day where they were greeted with free activities, live music and the unveiling of a new street library.

Held on March 10 in the gardens in Gosnells, the free event drew people of all ages, with families, children and bus loads of people from local disability providers joining in the fun.

Southern River Community Garden chairperson Dorothy Burke said they were pleased with the turn out and were grateful City of Gosnells Mayor Glenn Dewhurst and Southern River MLA Terry Healy could be there for the unveiling of the new street library.

“We have a lot of people gathering in the garden when the library was unveiled,” she said.

“It is a fantastic addition to the garden and we are thankful of WA Woodturners Association Gosnells-branch who built the library from scratch.”

The telephone box contains four shelves of books for people of all ages, which are available to the public to come and take home and enjoy.

Terry Healy said the garden was a hub for people in the Gosnells and Southern River community.

“I’ve been proud to be a part of the Community Garden for years now, and I’m honoured to unveil the new, unique community library,” he said.

The free open day was part of the City of Gosnells’ Homegrown Festival.
