It was worth the wait for Marri Grove Primary’s NAIDOC Week celebrations as the whole school took part in a range of activities yesterday.

NAIDOC Week fell during the school holiday break, however Aboriginal and Islander education officer Charlotte McGarry felt it was important that the school still highlight the event.

“Our children need to be aware of the history of Australia and what better way to learn from the traditional landowners,” she said.

The celebrations kicked off with a school ceremony and were followed by story telling, damper making, shelter making and face painting.

Students also got creative with Indigenous art practices and made friendship bracelets.

Ms McGarry said the whole school expressed many positive comments about the celebrations.

“We have been able to get assistance from Byford Secondary College with their ‘Follow the Dream’ group and we are hoping that these celebrations will become a yearly event,” she said.

This year’s NAIDOC theme was “Because of Her, We Can!” which celebrated the essential role that women have played and continue to play as active and significant role models.
