The new pedestrian bridge across Albany Highway will replace the existing bridge near Cecil Avenue, which is expected to be removed.

A new accessibility-friendly pedestrian bridge will be built across Albany Highway as part of the redevelopment of Westfield Carousel.

The bridge, located near the intersection of Cockram Street and Albany Highway, will feature lifts and stairs on either side, avoiding the need for long ramps and allowing people with mobility issues to safely cross Albany Highway.

The City has been working collaboratively with Main Roads WA and Scentre Group in relation to the design and long-term maintenance of the bridge.

City of Canning Mayor Paul Ng said the new bridge was a win for everyone.

“Making accessibility easier for all pedestrians aligns with the City’s Disability Access and Inclusion Plan, to ensure people with disabilities have the same opportunities as other people in relation to accessibility throughout Canning,” he said.

In order to make the bridge a reality, Scentre Group will construct the bridge at their cost, Main Roads WA will be responsible for ongoing maintenance for the bridge and lifts and the City will provide cleaning and security services to the lifts.

Detailed design is currently underway and once final approval is issued it will be delivered within 18 months.

The bridge is expected to be open for use by mid-2020.

Scentre Group said that on completion of the new pedestrian bridge, the existing bridge to the north will likely be removed given its condition and the fact that it does not meet current universal access requirements.

Construction of a universally accessible bridge was a condition of Scentre Group’s redevelopment of Westfield Carousel.
