Last weekend’s wild weather kept crews at Gosnells State Emergency Service on their toes with various call outs to storm-affected properties.
Operations officer Graham Fixter said crews were already somewhat stretched with some volunteers attending training courses but they managed to get to every call.
“We had a call on Saturday morning about a ceiling in Thornlie Avenue, Thornlie, that had started to collapse but by the time we got there it was already down,” he said.
“It was one of those older ceilings where the fibreglass had perished over time and with the wind over the weekend it caused a vacuum inside the ceiling which caused it to collapse.”
Mr Fixter said there was not much the volunteers could do other than make sure the surroundings were secure and advise the home owner to get in touch with their insurer.
The volunteer crews also attended a car versus house incident in Canning Vale, roof flooding at the Caltex Service Station in Albany Highway, Gosnells, and several homes that had cracked roof tiles and blocked gutters.
