The Department of Fire and Emergency Services is asking residents and land owners in the Perth hills to delay any plans to burn on their properties until weather conditions ease.
The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting gusty northerly winds to develop around the Perth hills this afternoon, August 20 with gusts expected to be about 55km/hr.
Fires, including private burns, could easily spread with fire behaviour unpredictable in nature.
Due to a set of unique weather conditions, today’s low to moderate fire danger rating for the area is not a true reflection of the fire risk.
Chief superintendent Gary Baxter said it was vital to delay burns until conditions improve to ensure the safety of the community.
“We only need to look to the Albany bushfires in May to see that big fires can take hold at any time of the year,” he said.
“Today’s predicted strong winds could easily fuel a small fire and turn it into a disaster.
“Don’t risk damaging your or your neighbour’s property. Wait until the weather improves to undertake mitigation activities.”
