A sausage in a bun, perfect weather and people willing to dig deep for those doing it tough formed the ideal equation for a fundraiser like no other.

Dubbed ‘Bangers For Bales’ the fundraiser, which was held in Byford last Saturday, raised money and awareness for drought-stricken farmers in New South Wales and Queensland.

Organiser Jen Kish said she felt compelled to coordinate the event after a couple of customers mentioned they were attending a similar event in Armadale.

The event attracted plenty of support from staff and volunteers from the Rotary Club of Byford and Districts, Byford Coles and Serpentine Jarrahdale Community Resource Centre who all rolled up their sleeves to pitch in.

Ms Kish said she was also pleased to see Member for Darling Range Alyssa Hayden stop by with a donation and shire councillor Rob Coales help out with the all-day event.

Byford and Districts Bendigo Bank chairperson Kim Petersen said it was great to see residents support the fundraising initiative.

“It was wonderful to see people of all ages young and old band together to help make a difference,” she said.

“Many sizable cash donations were received from community members who empathised with the farmers and their families at this difficult time.”

Rotary president Chris Thomas said its members jumped at the opportunity to help when asked by Ms Kish a few weeks ago.

“People were very generous, there were people who didn’t even want a sausage on the day who just reached into their pockets to donate to the cause.”

A total of $1900 was raised on the day with all proceeds going towards the purchase of hay bales for drought-stricken farmers.
