The library at Southern River College was jam packed with activities last week as students from several primary schools in the area attended its Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Fair.
Students from Wirrabirra, Gosnells and Ashburton Drive Primary were given the opportunity to learn about STEM concepts by interacting with robots, learning about DNA and exploring static electricity with the school’s Van Der Graaf generator.
Southern River College Dean of STEM Cheryl Andrade said the fair provided an opportunity for the primary school students to learn about STEM concepts in a fun and engaging way.
“Through these events students become more confident in their ability to learn, to progress in STEM subjects and embrace STEM careers,” she said.
“For our students at the college it was an opportunity for them to advance their science communication skills and deepen their own understanding of STEM.”
Ms Andrade said the students helped make very complex science easily understandable to the younger students by presenting concepts in clever, creative and interesting ways.
“They enjoyed sharing their knowledge and ensuring that our guests were happily learning,” she said.
