Stories about some of the region’s earliest pioneers will be told alongside their graves at an event held by a local conservation group later this month.

Members of the St Mary in the Valley Anglican Church Kelmscott Cemetery Conservation Group will be joining the descendants of some of the pioneers on September 30 to share their life stories.

Group member Kath Coulthard said the cemetery included gravesites dating back to the 1870s including Thomas Buckingham, Joseph Treeby, Betsy Cockram, Betsy Buckingham, Charles Fancote, Martin Jull, Lloyd Hughes, Ada Carrick, Martha Wesley and Stan Roberts.

“Some of the graves are in a very bad state,” she said.

“The conservation group is hoping through events and fundraisers like this to raise awareness of the historic significance of the cemetery and its role in the very early days of Kelmscott.”

A light afternoon tea will be provided and there will be a short recital by the Roleystone Singers.
