Indicative designs for a dog park in Byford which is expected to cost more than $460,000 were officially endorsed by Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale councillors last month.
The park, which will be located at the corner of Larsen Road and Sansimeon Boulevard is in its final stages of design with residents asked to voice their opinions by December 11.
The undeveloped land will be transformed into an area that will likely include separate areas for small and large dogs, grassed exercise areas, sandpits, agility equipment, water fountains, seating, footpaths and a car park.
The park was a long time in the making with the subject site identified in August 2016 as one of five prospective sites within the shire followed by community consultation and workshops to understand what was needed at the state-of-the-art facility.
At a council meeting last month the plans were unanimously endorsed by all councillors with councillor Bill Denholm amending a condition in relation to the children’s playground, citing concerns that Sansimeon Boulevard would be a thoroughfare and could be dangerous with small children around.
Shire president Michelle Rich said the response from the community during the consultation period showed the level of support that exists for this type of facility.
“The consultation process included an online survey which prompted nearly 60 submissions and a special workshop giving residents the opportunity to sit down with planners and help design the park,” she said.
“This is a community project in every sense and something we believe will add a tremendous amount of value from a social and lifestyle perspective.”
The land developer will provide a total of $399,500 for the project while an additional developer contribution of close to $70,000 will be allocated to upgrade the drainage of the area.
