More than 800 people flocked to the Serpentine Sports Ground on Saturday to celebrate Australia Day in style at the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale’s fun family-friendly event.
The day was filled with live music, water slides, equestrian demonstrations, a classic car show and a citizenship ceremony, which welcomed 50 new Australian citizens hailing from Ireland to Indonesia.
The prestigious Australia Day WA Community Citizen of the Year Award was presented to Neil and Stacey Bartlett for their contribution towards sport through the SJ Blues Cricket Club.
The Clem Kentish Community Service Award presented for outstanding contribution for more than 20 years service was awarded to Joan Gardner.
Ms Gardner has been an executive member of the Mardella Ladies Club, a founding member of the Hugh Manning Tractor and Machinery Museum, an honourary member of the Serpentine Jarrahdale Lions Club and an active member of the Mundijong Craft Group and Mundijong Exercise Club.
She has also been an integral part in organising the Kelmscott Show and is well known for helping cook the Australia Day breakfast every year.
The Australia Day WA Community Citizen of the Year Award went to Maxine Martin for her selfless work supporting families in need through her connection to Crisis Care.
Hannah Oatley and Meredith Kenny were each presented with Certificate of Achievement awards while the Rotary Service Above Self Award was presented to Diana and Ken Toohey.
