Not all heroes wear capes, some wear orange high-vis uniforms and hard hats.

On May 22 it will be the community’s chance to wear orange in a bid to thank and celebrate the hard work and dedication of our state emergency service volunteers.

The Serpentine Jarrahdale SES volunteer unit has about 25 members ranging from people in their early teens to retired pensioners.

Deputy local manager Jason Smith said volunteers meet on Wednesday nights for training to prepare them for any emergency situation that may come their way.

“The SES is the lead combat unit for flood, cyclone, storm and tsunami mitigation,” he said.

“This means the SES controls the situation whenever these situations occur.

“It also has the flexibility to support many other emergency organisations including search and rescue for the police, casualty handling for St John Ambulance and logistic and radio communications support for fire services.”

Mr Smith said through volunteering participants not only make new friends but also learn vital life skills such as first aid, map reading and navigation, storm damage techniques, leadership and team management.

The Serpentine Jarrahdale SES are looking for new members.

Anyone interested in joining can come along to training on Wednesdays from 6.30pm at 2 Cockram Street, Mundijong behind the shire building.
