A record 23,940 kilograms of hazardous waste was collected.

A recent household hazardous waste collection day was the most successful event and second best ever held in Perth, according to the City of Gosnells.

Local residents from the City of Gosnells removed a record of 23,940 kilograms of various hazardous waste from sheds and garages across the city earlier this month.

City of Gosnells mayor Glenn Dewhurst said there were 708 cars each containing 32 kilograms of waste.

The cars were filled with paints, poisons, pool chemicals, batteries and gas cylinders to be disposed correctly.

“We were overwhelmed by the community response to drop-off these items, which should never be put into your normal household or recycling bins,” he said.

Waste and solvent-based paint made up 69 per cent of the items collected and 15 per cent was from LPG gas cylinders.

WALGA president Cr Lynne Craigie said there are 13 permanent facilities across the state where people can drop off their household waste for free on an ongoing basis.

“The focus for the program in the coming years will be to provide more public access to drop off locations,” she said.

“Whether through new permanent facilities or hosting more temporary collection events.”

Next month the program will be promoted again to raise awareness about the importance of adequate disposal of hazardous items.

Depending on the type of materials collected, the products are neutralised recovered as energy or recycled.

For those residents who weren’t able to attend, there are eight metropolitan permanent drop-off facilities available across the city.
