Daphne Rhodes celebrated a milestone birthday in style at the weekend with several visits from her ever-growing brood.

Born in the south-west town of Yarloop on August 18, 1919, Ms Rhodes moved with her family to Chittering where she grew up and later married her first husband Patrick Ferguson at a local Anglican church.

Together the couple had three children named Lyn, Maxine and Kevin, who then went on to add to the family which now equates to eight grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and seven great great grandchildren.

Ms Rhodes’ daughter Lyn described her mother as a very quiet person who always listens, never judges and is always there to lend a hand no matter what.

“She was a dressmaker for most of her life,” she said.

“Her hobbies later in life were knitting, sewing and crocheting and she loved cooking and always made the best sponges.”

Mrs Rhodes spent many years with her first husband in Collie before moving to Midland where he later died.

She then married Leslie Rhodes and nursed him in his later years until he passed away.

Her daughter said her mother’s 100th birthday celebrations on Sunday were somewhat like an open house party as family and friends visited in Serpentine to deliver their best wishes.

“Since she moved to Serpentine she has been a member of our social club and has made many new friends,” she said.

“She had a lovely day for her 100th birthday and at one stage it was a full house.”
