Even though they didn’t win, our local rangers said they are thrilled to be nominated as the WA Ranger Team of the Year, which also marks their 21st anniversary of uninterrupted 24 hour, seven day a week service.
The Canning Ranger and Community Safety Service (RCSS) was nominated in the Rangers Association awards dinner on September 18.
In the last four years, the team has been selected as award finalists three times.
The annual awards recognise actions and achievements by local government community safety and ranger teams in Western Australia.
The city’s RCSS team aims to provide peace of mind to those that live in, work in and visit Canning.
The City of Canning mayor Paul Ng was happy with the nomination and said it proves RCSS’s great dedication and commitment with the community.
“We are obviously disappointed that we didn’t win but we’ve received really positive comments from the Canning community which is a win in itself,” he said.
Mr Ng said that over the past three years the RCSS has shifted its focus from a predominantly ‘reactive’ service to one that is far more ‘proactive’.
“The team took a proactive approach to community safety education and recently rolled out its Ranger Buddy Safety Education program, aimed at providing simple but important safety messages to the community in a fun and inclusive way,” he said.
Officers discourage antisocial behaviour and provide assistance to the community with relevant legislation and local law matters such as animal management, parking and fire hazard management.
Team members conduct proactive community patrols across 16 suburbs and also provide a free holiday watch patrol service for residents while they are away and Mr Ng said they have been very well received.
Last financial year the team auctioned over 11,534 cases, with an average customer satisfaction rating of 96.4 per cent.
The City of Rockingham took the WA Ranger Team of the Year title this year.
