Finalists of the 2019 Governor’s School STEM Awards have been announced and two local schools have been acknowledged.

Under the primary school category finalist Brookman Primary School demonstrated effective engagement in STEM across their student population and the wider community.

Principal Hans Geers said the school was genuinely excited to be named for a third time as a finalist in the governor’s STEM Awards.

“Our school has been actively involved in the governor’s STEM Awards for the last three years,” he said.

“In our first application in 2017 we received the Primary School ‘Meritorious Leadership Award’ (Runner Up) and in 2018 we won the Prestigious “Leadership Excellence Award’ (First Place).

Cecil Andrews College in Seville Grove was also finalist under the secondary school category.

Principal Stella Jinman said many students have aspirations and personalised STEM teaching prepares them for jobs of the future and equips them with 21st century skills.

“I am excited and proud of our school excelling in the STEM fields as a State leader, as we are engaging students and securing a bright future for them,” she said.

Each school will host a visit from the judging panel, who will meet with students and STEM leadership teams and watch the STEM enrichment classes in action to decide who will be the 2019 award winners.

Prizes for each of the primary and secondary school categories include $2000 for the ‘Leadership Excellence Award’ and $1000 for the ‘Meritorious Leadership Award’, a tour of government house and a visit to Scitech for up to 90 students, or free rental and delivery of a DIY Science Kit for eight weeks.
