There was plenty of colour and excitement at Woodland Grove Primary School last week as staff and students celebrated the many cultural backgrounds that make up the school cohort.

The Byford-based school celebrated Multicultural Day on November 7 with students from kindergarten through to year six joining in the fun activities.

Music specialist Sheela Sudhakaran said this year’s celebrations coincided with Music Count Us In, a national simultaneous sing-along where students from across the country learnt and sang the same song We Are.

“Multicultural Day, together with Music Count Us In, was a great opportunity to collectively appreciate the diversity and inclusivity of our school community to better understand and appreciate our friends and families,” she said.

Each class took part in a number of activities including turban and scarf tying demonstrations, Irish dancing, Indigenous games, African beading, dot painting and Indian henna, while a number of parents also came together to cook samosas, butter chicken and naan and sweets for the whole school to enjoy.

Principal Ashley Mottershead also came up with the idea to create hundreds of flags that were made by the students and then hung around the school to depict the cultural backgrounds of each family.
