Louisa May Alcott’s novel Little Women has been adapted in a number of plays, television series and musicals and now the latest 2019 film adaption takes a modern take on the 150-year-old novel.
The film is about the lives of four American sisters living in the aftermath of the Civil War and portrays economic realities, feminism and the idea of making dreams possible, despite society’s expectations on one’s gender.
The four sisters Jo (Saoirse Ronan), Meg (Emma Watson), Amy (Florence Pugh) and Beth March (Eliza Scanlen) seem to have an undeniable bond but also very distinctive personalities and aspirations.
The film itself is not narrated in a chronological order as the novel does, instead it uses colour grading to symbolise past and present and Jo seems to have full control of the story’s ending which makes it exciting yet frustrating.
Even though the story is based in the 19th century, the characters portray a much more modern performance making it enjoyable and at times even funny to watch.
