A local singing group will be recognised in state parliament this year for its efforts in bringing joy to elderly residents across WA.

The New ARVOSI Group, formerly referred to as the ARVOSI Group, started in 2001 and has since performed at various nursing homes.

Member for Thornlie Chris Tallentire wrote to the group late last year congratulating them and asked them if they would like to attend a lunch at state parliament in the new year.

Founder, conductor and tenor singer Peter Keable said the group has always maintained a strong following of about 13 to 14 members who enjoy performing many well-known songs from yesteryear.

“It has been a very rewarding journey,” he said.

“It’s about putting time back for those people who have awful health and letting them go back into their youth and giving them a bit of a lift.

“The nurses tell me that lift lasts for about a day, day-and-a-half after we have been and then the shutters come down into reality,” she said.

Peter’s wife Edith has enjoyed bringing joy to many in their senior years.

“The doctors said they want us to keep going as it helps people with dementia,” she said.

“Some of them come out and they are in a bed, their mouths are open and they are half asleep but after a while you see their fingers going and then their feet and then they start singing along.”

The New ARVOSI Group are currently looking for new singers to join the group.
