A petty theft in Mundijong earlier this month has left many local children with only half a useable playground to play on.
Two swing chairs and their chains were stolen from the playground on Paterson Street, opposite IGA supermarket between January 3 and 7 and as yet Mundijong Police have received no useful information in regards to the heartless theft.
Mundijong Police senior sergeant Gailene Hamilton confirmed there is no link to this theft and any other thefts in the area, however they have received reports of stealing in relation to other shire-owned play equipment.
The Mundijong Community Garden was targeted in November last year when thieves stole about 20 plants and shrubs from the Paterson Street garden, while Mundijong Primary School also found themselves as a target when staff and students returned to school to find they had zero chicken’s in the pen.
Mundijong Community Association chairperson Keira McConkey said the recent theft at the playground was disheartening.
“Many community members including past and present members of the Mundijong Community Association have worked hard to beautify the town centre, this is our home and we are incredibly proud of it,” she said.
“Many families visit this space while passing through the town, it’s a place to connect with each other and the swings were very well used.”
The cost to replace the swings is $600, plus shire staff time.
New swings are likely to be installed by the end of this month.
