Residents and staff from the Boronia Pre-Release Centre in Bentley raised money for charity by selling bake good and handicrafts in Perth.

A rehabilitative initiative by residents and staff of Boronia-Pre-Release Centre for Women went into action last Friday selling baked goods and handicrafts in Perth.

The stall raised $546.80 in two hours and sold out.

Within the next couple of weeks the Department Of Justice will be deciding on a charity to send the money to while still
promoting women’s estate industries with this initiative.

The women have taken part in the pre-release centre’s hospitality training course, to gain skills to equip themselves for employment upon release.

There was a variety of freshly baked goods including brioche, focaccia, croissants and bread rolls.

The women also sold handicrafts created by prisoners from Bandyup Women’s Prison, which marked its 50th anniversary on Friday.

Corrective Services Commissioner Tony Hassall said the event was a good opportunity to showcase the rehabilitative work of staff and the skills that offenders gained, through training and education.

“These women get experience which sets them up for their futures,” he said.

“Last week’s event gave them the added value of working in a real-life sales situation, where they were able to interact with customers in a retail situation.”
