Despite the chaos unfolding around them, one young Seville Grove family has vowed to give back to those on the frontline of the coronavirus crisis.
For the foreseeable future the Pilkington family, including McKenzie (11), Cailynn (8), twins Hartley and Baylah (6) and Sonny (4) will use their pocket money to make care packages for the ‘superheroes in scrubs’.
Each fortnight the siblings along with mum Kaleisha plan to prepare treats and messages of kindness for staff at Perth’s hospitals.
Ms Pilkington said the idea came after one of the children began asking questions about the virus.
“I stressed to them that it wasn’t their job to worry about what was going on,” she said.
“I reminded them that we’re fortunate enough to have clinics with doctors and nurses working around the clock to look after those that were sick.”
Ms Pilkington said the children expressed a desire to give back.
“They asked if they could get the doctors and nurses some flowers but we decided to put our thinking caps on and think about what they might need,” she said.
It wasn’t long before the children compiled the care packages, the first of which was delivered to Fiona Stanley Hospital on March 20.
Ms Pilkington said she believed it was her duty to teach the next generation about doing the right thing particularly in times of hardship.
“They’re just really excited by the idea of giving back,” she said.
