A local family in Willetton took the teddy bear hunt to another level as they are committed to displaying a daily set of gigantic teddy bears until social distancing restrictions are lifted.
In the light of the health crisis, Meleka, Tim Newey and their two children, Chase (6) and Adison (9), decided to spend their weekends creating an interactive display for the community.
So far, the family has created about 24 different teddy bear themes, including a tightrope walker, hot air ballooning, surfing safari, a forklift teddy bear ride and healthcare teddy bear workers’ display.
Most southern suburbs are now actively participating in the teddy bear hunt movement, with children and adults spotting teddy bears from people’s windows and front yards.
“Our teddy bears were too big for the windows, so we put them on the kids’ table and chairs on the front lawn and simulated a tea party,” Mr Newey said.
“We then did something different each for the next few days and then posted it on social media.
“The reaction we got was amazing which then got the imagination going – we are committed to doing this until the restrictions are lifted and kids go back to school.
“This has been a great life lesson for us all. Although frustrating at times trying to adjust to the isolation, it has given us a chance to appreciate the small things and not take life and our experiences for granted.”
Mr Newey said the displays have become a token of appreciation for healthcare workers and love and friendship within the community.
The latest display and the family’s favourite was a commemoration of ANZAC Day.
“The tributes were very special to us, as we have friends and family who have either served our country in the military or who are currently serving on the front line of this pandemic,” he said.
“This was our way to say a massive thank you for the sacrifices they have given.”
Within the coming days, people around Burrendah Boulevard and other neighbouring suburbs will be able to spot a proposal and a wedding teddy bear display, as well as canoeing and a retrieval of cats in trees theme.
