Minister for transport Rita Saffioti, Member for Jandakot Yaz Mubarakai and candidate for Riverton Dr Jags will be talking to local residents about noise issues.

Noise issues have Leeming residents wanting to push for the construction of a noise abatement wall around Karel Avenue between Roe Highway and Farrington Road can now have their say.

Member for Jandakot, Yaz Mubarakai, and candidate for Riverton, Dr Jags, have been working with Leeming residents and the minister for transport Rita Saffioti to push for the noise abatement wall.

Local residents first brought the need for a noise abutment wall to the attention of Mr Mubarakai in 2018 when the project was announced.

“So far, Dr Jags and I have heard back from over 30 residents who are supportive of this project – on top of more than 100 people from the previous petition,” he said.

“With the break in the weather, Dr Jags and I will be looking to get out there and start door knocking those remaining residents whose properties are adjacent to Karel Ave to hear their thoughts on a noise abutment wall.

“This has been quite a contentious local issue for some time.

“I ask that you help me work with the minister on this project and continue to let me and my team know of your support for the abetment wall.

“Not only will it help create local jobs, but it’ll also dramatically reduce the impact of traffic noise on Leeming.”

Leeming resident Jennifer Barton said there were various issues with noise levels along with the safety issues being of great concern in both directions along Karel Avenue.

“Main Roads sent a flyer in 2018 stating that they were about to embark on roadworks to increase the lanes in both directions along Karel Avenue and asked if anyone was interested in having a meeting with them,” she said.

“A petition was suggested and Ray Taylor and I took notes and then drew up a petition which I took around to the 88 houses in our area.

“The petition was signed by nearly all the residents.

“Unfortunately, due to the situation we now find ourselves in with being housebound we have found that the noise is impacting on our health.

“We find that severe wind, noise and pollution issues are now becoming a real concern.”

With the Roe Hwy to Farrington Road section of the $28.7m duplication works nearing completion in the coming weeks, Mr Mubarakai has launched a campaign to amplify the calls of residents for these upgrades.

Mr Mubarakai said that the first estimates of the costing of the project are between $2 to $3 million, and if approved could be completed before the end of 2021. To support this petition, visit bit.ly/2EOa8dc
