A Mardella group was inviting new members to come and learn spinning and fibre crafts.

Lynne Strike, who organises Mardella spin on in, said the small group met monthly to spin locally sourced sheep and alpaca wool into yarn, which was then used for crafts like knitting, weaving, felting and crocheting.

She said many of the group’s members had sheep or alpacas and rather than throw it away they brought the fibre in to spin.

“We’re a small group but we’re companionable,” she said.

“We meet on a Sunday so people don’t have to juggle it around work and everything.

“It gives people time to relax and enjoy the camaraderie with no pressure to do it more than once a month.”

Ms Strike said she began spinning more than 35 years ago after falling in love with the idea that she could make her own materials.

“I have always knitted and crocheted and with spinning I can make whatever I want for those crafts rather than just buying what’s on offer,” she said.

“Spinning is good because once you’ve learnt to spin it’s very relaxing and it allows your frustrations to flow through your work and let it go.”

Ms Strike said members brought their own fibre to spin and new members who didn’t have any could use the group to find sources for fibre.

Mardella spin on in meets every third Sunday of the month at the Mardella ladies hall at the corner of Wright and Shanley roads in Mardella.
