The 2020 Kent Street Weir Precinct Plan is set to further enhance one of the region’s best attractions, according to the City of Canning.

On October 20, council approved a motion calling for the city to allocate $6.5 million from its draft 2021-22 budget to implement Stage Four of the plan.

The plan includes the construction of a district level play area, along with the expansion and upgrade of the weir’s pump track and bicycle facilities.

The city will develop a new junior nature-based play area, more picnic shelters, a new toilet block, and expanded car parking facilities.

The motion also called for the city to invest in a feasibility study for the development of a water craft facilities hub at Centenary Park West.

If built, the hub could house the Fury River Dragon Boat Club and the Canning River Canoe Club.

Speaking at last week’s meeting, CRCC president Simon O’Sullivan thanked the city for taking the club’s initial concerns into consideration.

“We are keen to still have a presence at our current location,” he said.

“I recognise that the council has had to balance a whole bunch of objectives in developing this master plan.

“Our deputation expressed our support for the plan, and the changes the city have made to it.”

The city has confirmed it would be organising a series of information and engagement sessions over the next few months.

“Council’s $8.5 million investment in the precinct underscores its significance as an environmental and cultural hub, and its importance to the entire Canning community as a place to meet, play and recreate,” a City of Canning spokesperson said.

“So many of us have fond memories of the much-loved Kent St Weir, and the implementation of the Precinct Plan will ensure that the Weir remains a favourite destination for local families for generations to come.”

Stage Four works are now expected to commence in early 2021.
