The streets of Mundijong were scattered with jack-o-lanterns, skeletons and spooky characters on Saturday, as 300 revellers took part in the town’s inaugural Halloween Scavenger Hunt.
The free event, hosted by the Mundijong Community Association, was designed to engage the community in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic – which has seen a number of the shire’s most highly anticipated annual events cancelled.
The Association had initially expected around 150 participants, but the 250-ticket allocation was soon exhausted.
Though the association has held its fair share of successful community events in the past, Mundijong Community Association chair Keira McConkey said she was amazed by the turn out.
“We were overwhelmed by the amount of support we had, particularly given it was the inaugural event.
“A highlight of the day was definitely the headless horseman, who came along and begun handing lollies out to the children.
“It was an absolute hit and I think that that really captured the community spirit of Mundijong and showed the value of being involved with and supporting the local community.
“It was about engaging the community post-COVID-19, and it most definitely did that – the town was full.
“The majority of local businesses jumped at the opportunity to support us.
“We’re certainly planning a 2021 sequel, among other community events.”
The association’s membership experienced a significant boost, too, increasing by one-third since the event.
For more than a decade, the association has been working to advocate for the local community, drive social connection, activate the town centre and preserve the town’s rich 127-year history.
