Australia Day in Armadale will look a little different this year due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The City of Armadale said it had to cancel its Australia Day annual celebrations at Minnawarra Park to ensure the safety of the public.

Minnawarra Park is typically filled with live music, food trucks, carnival rides and children’s activities on Australia day but this year the event cannot go ahead.

The city said safety is its main priority.

Celebrations are not discouraged though as the city has urged the community to host Australia Day celebrations in their own backyard or use one of the city’s public barbecues scattered throughout the greater Armadale area.

Mayor Ruth Butterfield said that 107.3 Heritage FM will cover entertainment as they provide an Australia Day broadcast on Tuesday January 26th.

“A list of local talent will keep you entertained from midday through to 9pm, so you can sit back and enjoy the day,”she said.

One tradition may be cancelled but Armadale’s Annual Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony will still go ahead in COVID-safe conditions.

“It’s always a pleasure to welcome new citizens into our community and our country, and to celebrate the shared values which unite us.

“Our Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony will be held at the Armadale District Hall, where 60 new citizens will receive their certificates.

“The occasion will also provide an opportunity to recognise the wonderful work of individuals and community groups, with the announcement of the Community Citizen of the Year Awards.

“This year, we received 31 nominees, and I’m looking forward to sharing the stories of these inspiring people, with our community.”

The city urges everyone to stay safe by maintaining safe distances and following good hygiene.

The city said it also hopes to provide a bigger event in 2022, bringing back activities and food that will be missed this year.
