Gosnells mayor David Goode, his fellow councillors, and city staff visited the site of the new Thornlie and Community Sports Hub.

An ongoing project is on the cusp of bringing two of Thornlie’s biggest sporting associations closer together.

The Thornlie Community and Sports Hub will soon house both the Thornlie Tennis Club and Thornlie Bowling Club.

Currently under construction, the premises will include a community hall (with a kitchen and servery area), a combined function/bowls’ members area, and a tennis clubroom area.

Once the entire project is complete, community groups will be allowed to hire out the facility for major events.

Structural steel works have been installed, while the brickwork phase is now under way.

The construction crew has already finished the facility’s new carpark.

Earlier this week, City of Gosnells’ councillors and staff members were given an exclusive tour of the building site.

“It’s been very exciting to watch this building rise from the ground, and I look forward to the day when we can welcome the whole community to enjoy it,” Gosnells mayor David Goode said.

“The hub will provide important facilities to keep local residents active, provide a welcoming meeting place, and support local community groups.”

The project was jointly funded by the City of Gosnells, the Federal Government, Lotterywest, and the Thornlie Bowling Club.

The new premises will benefit both clubs and the wider community, according to Thornlie Bowling Club secretary Arthur Tunnicliffe.

“The clubrooms that we have now are more than 50-years-old and need to be re-built…the new building will make for a huge improvement,” he said.

“The new premises will help us to attract more members and new bowlers.”

The hub’s construction phase is due for completion later this year, prior to the demolition of the tennis club and bowls club’s current facilities.
