Road safety is a key concern for the community as the upcoming Easter long weekend will see more than 400,000 Easter campers across the country hit the roads.
The COVID-19 pandemic has seen more West Australian’s exploring their backyard than before, due to flight restrictions.
Feedback from local caravan parks has shown that many sites across WA are completely booked out over Easter weekend, with some families booking the same sites every year.
With more cars on the road than usual, it is important to be alert and safe as you drive.
This year 39 fatalities have occurred so far on West Australian roads, with 25 of those on regional roads.
For a safe journey ensure all occupants of the vehicle are secured safely with a seatbelt or child car seat, don’t drive tired or under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
The Road Safety Commission (RSC) website has some tools drivers can utilise to receive the latest information on road safety and test their reaction time and fatigue levels.
Tips on how to appropriately balance the load of caravans and trailers can also be found on the RSC website.
The City of Armadale Mayor Ruth Butterfield warns road users to take care when driving this long weekend.
“The Easter period is a time we get to spend with our family and friends, but it’s also a time when the roads can be at their busiest and most dangerous,” she said.
“If you are travelling away by car over the holiday period, please take regular breaks, drive to the conditions and take time to enjoy the journey.
“We all share the roads, whether as drivers, passengers, cyclists or pedestrians, so let’s all arrive at our destinations safely.”
Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale President Michelle Rich also encouraged anybody heading away to stay safe and be vigilant.
“The Easter holiday break will undoubtedly see an increase to the amount of vehicles on local and regional roads,” she said.
“I encourage anyone heading away this Easter long weekend to allow extra time for their journey and to be vigilant.
“We want everyone to arrive at their holiday destinations safe and sound, so I implore anyone travelling this Easter to obey the speed limit and don’t drive tired.
“On behalf of the Shire of the Serpentine Jarrahdale I would like to wish all of our residents a happy and safe Easter.”
Double demerit points will be in effect from Thursday April 1 until Monday April 5.
Police officers will be on the roads ensuring the safety of citizens, but anyone who witnesses dangerous or unsafe driving is urged to contact the police.
