The Mundijong library will be moved to Byford after it was given the go ahead during a special council meeting held by the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale on Monday.
The council approved the motion to move the library services from their current facility in Mundijong to the Byford Hall.
The move to Byford Hall will cost approximately $1.89 million but was the most cost effective option with alternative options ranging up to $24.2 million for one phase of two.
Shire President Michelle Rich said the current facility in Mundijong does not cater for future growth and expansion, which is vital to support the Shire’s growing population.
“The library regularly reaches capacity for programs and events, which means they are often delivered off-site or at a reduced capacity and there is limited space available for community members or groups to meet within the building,” Ms Rich said.
“By moving the library services to Byford Hall it will provide greater access to a majority of the Shire’s population, allow for additional books and resources, improved spaces and technology and the opportunity for customer service functions and co-working spaces to be provided.”
The Shire will also investigate the provision of a weekly mobile library service, which would visit areas of the shire including Mundijong, Serpentine and Jarrahdale.
Residents were concerned about the library moving to Byford, due to access issues and the impact the move will have on residents.
Ms Rich said the Shire understands the community concerns but the said the shire is committed to working with the community for the best outcome.
“Opportunities for community input to help shape the delivery of the Shire’s library services, both at the new location at Byford Hall and through a mobile service, will be provided in the coming weeks,” she said.
“The Shire is committed to working with existing hirers of Byford Hall to assist them in identifying alternative facilities to continue their programming and activities,” Ms Rich said.
“The Shire will meet with each current facility hirer of Byford Hall to understand their requirements and explore any relocation assistance, financial assistance by waiving or discounted fees, and any potential upgrades that may be required to alternative facilities.
