The Minnawarra Art Awards winners were announced last Friday as local artists received much deserved recognition.

The Art Awards was held by the City of Armadale as part of the Armadale Arts Awards.

As part of an annual event, the Art Awards program brings together entries from established and emerging artists, with the aim to reflect diversity of practices in contemporary and traditional art.

Mayor Ruth Butterfield said she was thrilled the city was been able to proceed with the Armadale Arts Festival and the Minnawarra Art Exhibition, despite some COVID-19 restrictions.

“Now in its’ 24th year, the Minnawarra Art Awards provide a benchmark for West Australian artists,” she said.

“We received an overwhelming number of ‘requests to enter’ this year and only the very best works are selected to be included in the exhibition, so congratulations to all those artists who have their work displayed.

“The creativity, ideas, technical skills and variety of expression impressed the judges.

“There is a very high calibre of talent on show and I encourage everyone to take advantage of the opportunity to see works by some of WA’s top artists, while they’re in Armadale”.

Winners of the awards were Abdul-Rahman Abdullah for the City of Armadale Art Award, Julie Fearns-Pheasant for the Local Artist Award, Rohin Kickett received the Aboriginal Artist Award, Kate Webb won the Gerry Gauntlett Award and Hillary Phillips-Ryley received the High Commended Award.

Prizes for the awards ranged from $2000 to $12,000.

The 2021 judging panel consisted of Dr Bruce Slatter, Lee Kinsella and Ron Bradfield Jnr.

Curated by Ron Nyisztor, the Minnawarra Art Awards is open to the public every day from 11am to 4pm until Sunday May 16 at the Armadale District Hall.

The exhibition is free and all artworks are for sale.
