Riverton RSL president Bill Collidge has been acknowledged for his amazing efforts to help the local community.
Mr Collidge was recently named the WA Winner of the 2021 ANZAC of the Year Award, presented by the Returned and Services League of Australia WA Branch inc.
“The award was totally unexpected and, while I am proud of it, it is very humbling,” Mr Collidge said.
“It would not have been possible but for the outstanding support, mateship, and commitment of our RSL family at Riverton.
“The efforts of all at Riverton are the reasons we have been successful in our provision of welfare, support, and advocacy to veterans in our district throughout the year.”
As president and secretary, Mr Collidge steered the Riverton RSL through the COVID pandemic and subsequent recession.
The RSL has provided support to many community groups and sporting organisations over the past 12 months, including the Willetton Bridge Club and Willetton Football Club.
Last year’s Toy Cavalcade campaign saw the RSL collect around $8000 worth of toys for underprivileged children within the region.
Once again, the initiative was held in conjunction with Communicare, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, State Emergency Services, and WA Police.
The RSL was proud to hold its 2021 ANZAC Day dawn service via social media, in accordance with COVID restrictions.
“We live-streamed our dawn service in order to keep the Spirit of ANZAC alive and well in the community,” Mr Collidge said.
“It gave our members a focal point, as they stood in their driveways with a candle at dawn.
“So far, we have had more than 500 views.”
Mr Collidge is now preparing for the RSL’s 2021 Vietnam Veterans Day commemorations in August.
