With Tangney shaping as a major battleground in the upcoming Federal Election, Federal and State Labor have targeted Nicholson Road as a key project, announcing on Monday a $70 million dollar commitment to transform Nicholson Road.

Between January 2015 and December 2019, 210 crashes were recorded at the roundabout between Garden Street, Nicholson Road and Yale Road intersection.

Federal Labor’s $35 million dollar commitment, which will be matched by the State Government, will replace the roundabout and fund the construction of a new pedestrian overpass, allowing safe crossing for pedestrians.

The works will coincide with the new station works for the Metronet Thornlie Cockburn Link.

In February, Member for Tangney Ben Morton committed $5 million, a figure matched by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti, to fund planning and development works for the project.

“The State Government had been using funds held within the Main Roads budget to commence the planning of the project,” she said.

“Up to $1m has been spent so far in developing the concept, and Main Roads will continue to use State funds, together with Federal Government funds to proceed with the more detailed planning.

“It is expected that up to $5m would be contributed by the State for detailed planning and forward works.”

Mr Morton hit out at the Labor Party commitment, labelling it as purely political.

“This is purely a political promise from Federal Labor, not actual delivery of locked in funding,” he said.

“They are Johnny-Come-Lately on this issue – they have done none of the work leading up to it.

“With the support of our local community, I secured the planning funding to get the work started.

“I’m not settling for second best – I’m working to secure the construction funding locked in – not making cheap political promises like Federal Labor.”
