While some teenagers might cook pasta at a pinch, St Norbert College student Grace Edmonds has proved to be a pasta master with a cake decoration that would challenge even the most skilled bakers.
In her first attempt at cake decorating, the Year 10 food science student crafted fondant, made of sugar, water and gelatine into oodles of pasta, meatballs, parmesan and basil, complete with hand-painted edible silver pot and floating spoon.
“Our task was to make a cake that was about ourselves and I thought, ‘Well, I love pasta and Mum is Italian’ so I could bring that together and make a pasta cake,” she said.
“It was a really fun project to do and I was shocked by how simple it was in the end.
“I put the fondant through a pasta machine and it came out well the first time. After that, all the other elements came together quite easily – a bit like making a real pasta dish.
“Dad and Mum helped with ideas so I thank them for that – it was Mum’s idea to put the tea towel on the bottom as a finishing touch.’’
Grace’s pasta cake is one of 10 standout gateaux on show at St Norbert College’s annual Creative Arts Exhibition and earnt her first prize in the cake category.
From portraits to pyjamas, the event showcases hundreds of students’ works in subject areas of visual art, digital technology, wood and metal technology, textiles and photography.
The St Norbert College Creative Arts Exhibition, free and open to the public, is on at the Queens Park school’s Xanten Performing Arts Centre until Friday.
