According to neighbours, the carport was the first to go up, before flames spread to the house.

Neighbours on Chidzey Drive in Seville Grove woke up to a hectic scene early Friday, January 6, as fire trucks filled the street to battle a blaze that left one house destroyed.

Nine fire crews from Armadale, Maddington and Welshpool tackled the blaze after the call went out just after 2.30am.

The fire was under control by 3.20am, but the saga was far from over.

At around 8.30am, crews rushed back to the scene after reports the fire had reignited, apparently caused by smouldering furniture within the property.

The flames were quickly extinguished for good.

One neighbour, Justin, whose family has lived next door to the property for 20 years, said he was awoken by the sound of the neighbour’s smoke alarm.

“I was sleeping in the lounge and I heard beeping,” Justin said.

“I got up and got a drink and looked out through the kitchen window and it was orange, glowing.”

The house is managed by Housing Authority WA under the Department of Communities, who said, while emergency accommodation arrangements were offered to the family, they told the department they were able to stay with relatives.

Justin’s partner Joanne said the resident rushed over when they came out of their house.

“She came over when we walked out at 3am. She came walking from the park and just grabbed me and said, ‘I don’t know what happened, I don’t know how it got so out of control, my house is gone, all our stuff is gone’,” Joanne said.

Police advise they are not investigating the cause of the fire. The estimated costs of damage are yet to be assessed.
