Canning will provide residents with better waste services, with the move to an on-demand bulk waste collection service endorsed at last week’s council meeting.
Due to commence early 2024, Veolia Recycling and Recovery will provide an on-demand skip bin service that will replace the current bulk waste verge collections.
When the service starts residents will receive two on-demand skip bin services a financial year, which they can book at a time convenient for them.
Over the last two years the council has seen a 20 per cent increase in the volume of bulk hard waste put out for verge collections which has largely been a result of an increase of non-compliant and hazardous waste piles, illegal dumping and commercial trade waste.
Additionally, personnel and skills shortages, an ageing collection fleet and a lack of suitable contractors, has resulted in unforeseen delays to verge collection services.
Mayor Patrick Hall said introducing the on-demand bulk waste collections would significantly improve the City’s service delivery to residents.
“We have listened to the community’s frustrations around the verge collections and moving towards an on-demand bulk waste collection will see an improved service delivery for our residents,” he said.
“The on-demand bulk waste collections will allow residents to organise a collection time that suits their needs and is convenient for them, instead of having to wait for their scheduled date.
“It will also contribute to keeping our streets clean, reducing illegal dumping and minimising waste sent to landfill.
“The introduction of on-demand skip bins is in addition to a range of other services that we already provide to residents including on-call white good pickups, mattress pickups, and the re-introduction of ‘tip passes’ for our Ranford Road Waste Transfer Station.
“We’re providing greater flexibility and more options than ever before.”
Green waste collections will continue as scheduled, with dates for the collections published in the Waste Guide and available on the City’s website.
Tip passes allowing the free drop off of household mixed waste and recycling to the waste transfer station are also a part of the better waste service delivery and were sent out to ratepayers with the annual rates notice earlier this month.
