The Canning Repair Lab is back again after the success of the first two events held earlier this year.
The lab is a free community initiative run by the council, with support from local skilled volunteers, which helps people fix their belongings and saves items going to landfill.
As a result of the successful repair labs held in June and August, the labs will be scheduled on the third Sunday of every second month.
In total 64 items were repaired from the first two repair labs, this included 39 textile items, 14 household items such as chairs and suitcases, and seven bicycles.
Of all the items seen by the lab volunteers, 83 per cent were successfully repaired and 98 per cent of the participants rated the lab as a five-star event.
Mayor Patrick Hall said he was grateful to the volunteers.
“Over the trial of the last two events we had seven skilled repair volunteers and three wonderful assistant volunteers, who helped run and manage the events,” he said.
“These volunteers give up their time to connect with the local community and help others avoid throwing away fixable things, without them these events would not be possible, so we are extremely grateful.”
Volunteer, Grace Yeung, said she was proud to be a part of the repair labs and is happy to see them take a permanent place.
“This event benefits our local community by giving their pre-loved item a second life, it is also a good opportunity for me to reflect on my life by thinking and exploring ways to contribute to the circular economy,” she said.
“By explaining to my five-year-old girl the mission of the repair lab and showing her around, I am so proud to see the blossoming of this beautiful message in our next generation.”

The next repair lab is scheduled on Sunday October 15 from 9:30am to 12pm at the Canning River Eco Education Centre (CREEC) in Kent Street Weir Park, Wilson.
