Armadale and Kelmscott businesses will be the first to trial a partnership program with WA Police to help combat crime.
Operation SCAN (stop crime action network) will introduce an ‘inter-business’ radio network linking businesses and police.
When an offence occurs, businesses can use handheld devices to communicate information immediately over the radio network, which will be monitored by police.
A description of the person of interest and the offence type will allow others in the network to know what is happening and where.
If the program is successful it is hoped it will be rolled out to other business districts across the metropolitan area.
Armadale Acting Senior Sergeant Tom Weidmann said it would improve police responses.
“So we will be aware of what’s happening and can respond quicker,” he said.
City of Armadale mayor Henry Zelones said the introduction of a radio communication network will allow businesses to report details of offenses immediately.
“By implementing a ‘business helping business’ system relevant stakeholders are working together to stop crime through a shared communication mechanism,” he said.
“The trial’s ultimate success will rely on businesses uniting to form a frontline defence against shoplifting, handbag theft, theft from motor vehicles and antisocial behaviour.”
