Fire law declared invalid

Gosnells Council will continue to operate its Bush Fire Brigade despite the State Government’s Joint Standing Committee declaring its bushfire law invalid in a statement to the deputy chair of the Legislative Council last week.

Gosnells chief executive officer Ian Cowie said there would be no change to fighting fires in Gosnells as a result of the Joint Standing Committee’s recommendation that the city’s local law be disallowed.

“The city has operated a Bush Fire Brigade for almost 15 years without a local law being in place,” he said.

“The City’s Bush Fire Brigade will continue to operate and respond to fires as it always has.”

He said the council was aware that the Joint Standing Committee on Delegated Legislation intended to recommend to Parliament that the City’s Bush Fire Brigade Local Law be disallowed.

“The Joint Standing Committee requested various amendments to the local law that the city disagreed with,” he said.

“Unfortunately, the city is not able to share the details of the differing positions with community members, because the Joint Standing Committee declined the city’s request to publish details of communications between the two parties.

“It is most disappointing the city’s position on the local law was not reflected in the committee’s report to Parliament,” Mr Cowie said.
