AFAC’s swim school instructors and supervisors are key to the swim school’s persistent success.

More people than ever are learning to swim at the Armadale Fitness and Aquatic Centre, potentially making it the most popular swim school in the state for a second year running.

Enrolments at AFAC’s swim school have surpassed last season’s, hitting 3700 at the start of February 2024.

Last March, the swim school set a WA all-time high of 3,607 enrolments, so it’s very likely that this year’s figures will trigger a new state record. But reporting of numbers from other facilities won’t be made official until the season’s end.

In fact, AFAC are on target to hit the 4000th enrolment mark sometime around March, based on currents trends.

“This achievement speaks volumes to the unwavering commitment and dedication of our exceptional Swim School Instructors and Swim School Supervisors. It is amazing to see such high numbers of our community visit AFAC to learn a lifelong and lifesaving skill,” AFAC Swim School Team Leader Danielle Lysle said.

Last year the team also received the ‘Swim Coaches and Teachers Australia, SwimSafer Award of Excellence’ award, adding to their stellar reputation.

AFAC’s Safety Week will be held from Monday 26 February to Sunday 3 March, and National Learn to Swim Day is on Saturday 18 May.

In the beginning weeks of semester two, World Drowning Day will be acknowledged by the centre on Thursday 25 July.

“Safety in and around the water is a critical skill and can often mean the difference between life and death. The swim school program is a crucial element to developing the water skills and awareness that give everyone the confidence to be in and around water, regardless of that being a pool, the beach, or by a river,” Mayor Ruth Butterfield said.

“Congratulations to the AFAC team for these outstanding numbers in the Swim School.”
