Over 100 people attended the Serpentine Jarrahdale SES unit’s Wear Orange Wednesday (WOW) celebration last week.

Unit manager Martin Seward was thrilled by the response to the event, which coincided with National Volunteer Week, and an SJ Shire citizenship ceremony.

Fifty freshly sworn-in Aussies and attendees trekked across the road to discover what the SES does for the community, and the volunteering opportunities available to them.

New citizens Jagpreet Singh and Ramanpreet Deol with daughter Sukh Leen Kaur attended the WOW Day after being sworn-in.

Twelve new names were scrawled on the volunteer recruit list by the end of the night.

“It was a very successful night – everyone got stuck in,” Mr Seward said.

“We might look to do it again next year.”

This year’s WOW Day was especially significant as the SES is currently celebrating 65 years of protecting the WA community.

Martin Seaward has clocked up more than 40 years with the SES during that time.

So, he was the perfect candidate to talk about the merits of donning the orange.

“There’s a satisfaction in giving back to the community,” he said.

“And of feeling useful when your community is in need. Plus, you learn some worthwhile new skills in the process.”

He thanked shire councillors, and local MPs Hugh Jones and Andrew Hastie for attending, and his unit members for assisting.
