Canning’s Cecil Avenue East has been recognised at the 2024 Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) WA Awards.
The project received the 2024 AILA WA Landscape Architecture Award for Infrastructure and the 2024 AILA WA ShadeSmart Award during the ceremony held on Friday May 31.
The successful transformation of Cecil Avenue East was achieved through a collaborative effort with PLACE Laboratory, Porter Consulting Engineers, ETC, Light Application, Lightning Brick Pavers, Ellenby, Darryl Bellotti, Concreto, and contractor BMD Group.
It now features improved transport links, generous paths, and lush landscaping inspired by the “Riverine City” narrative.
The sculptural filigree lighting on the median poles provides an indigenous narrative of the nearby Canning River and the life of the area.
Canning mayor Patrick Hall said the project was a testament to the City’s commitment to creating quality spaces.
“This project has revitalised our city centre, transforming it into a hub for gatherings and community activities, enhancing the quality of life for our residents and supporting local businesses.”, he said.
“The redevelopment has set a new benchmark for future road projects, emphasising Green Infrastructure designed for the enjoyment and benefit of everyone.
“Cecil Avenue East now stands as a superb example of sustainable urban design, showcasing the importance of integrating shade, accessibility, and community-focused spaces into city planning.”
