The state government has given itself 18 months to build one of WA’s largest primary schools, in Hilbert.
Development plans were approved on July 15 for a school that could eventually accommodate up to 1000 students at the vacant lot bordered by Brighstone Avenue, Leighfield Rd and Eleventh Rd.
There are currently only four primary schools in the state with over 1000 students, with two of those – Harrisdale and Piara Waters Primary – in the City of Armadale. The proposed school in Hilbert would be the city’s third mega-primary school.
The ambition is to open the new school in time for the first semester in 2026.
It would be the very first school in the new Wungong Urban Water Development Area – a 1580ha formerly semi-rural area that will eventually be home to 40,000 people.
The school will be built in two stages. The first bricks-and-mortar classrooms in Stage 1 will house around 540 students.
Another 300 students could be housed in 10 on-site demountables until Stage 2 is built.
A total of 229 on-site car parking bays are proposed for the school, with 124 bays allocated to staff and 105 pick-up/drop-off bays provided.
Three covered bike shelters will house up to 110 bicycles and 42 scooters.
And a new bus route 248 is planned for Eleventh Road which will provide a future public transport option.
The proposed development has an estimated construction cost of $36 million.
Education Minister and Member for Armadale Dr Tony Buti announced the plan to build the area’s first school in December last year.
“For families in Hilbert, what an exciting time this will be to send their children to the first school in the Wungong Urban Master Plan,” he said.
