Jarrahdale sparkled on Sunday as it played host to the shire’s favourite annual event.

The SJ Lions Club’s Sandra Hawkins said 5500 people filed through the gates for this year’s Log Chop and Country Fair – beating last year’s turnout.

She said the new amusements were very well received.

Evangeline Goile (3) loved the pony ride.

“The little ponies worked solidly all-day giving rides to delighted children,” Ms Hawkins said.

“And there were queues all day for the other rides.

“By all accounts the day operated very smoothly, and everyone was well-behaved.”

The Central Districts Axemen’s Association said competition was fierce across this year’s events.

WA’s-own Alek Ashcroft took out his first Australian title, winning the 275mm Australian Standing Block Championship in just 23.35 seconds, beating out Joe Thomas and Brent Rees.

For the second year in a row, Queenslander Gerald Youles conquered in the 275mm Underhand Championship, splitting through his log in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it time of 14.65 seconds.

Home state champion Frazer Hull won the 250mm Graham Glass Memorial Standing Block contest.

While Fred Hull claimed the 250mm Veterans Standing Block honour.

SJ local Tod Bergersen laid claim to the 300mm Brian Johnson Memorial Underhand, but was pipped to the 250mm 3 Board Tree win by Zachary Miller and Daniel Slattery.

Tyson Maddern and Zayden Thomas posed for a photo after competing.

Congratulations also goes to 250mm Underhand Novice winner Zayden Thomas, and second-placed Tyson Maddern who each scored an axe from local retired axeman Terry Ashcroft.
