A Western Australian local has taken out the second Mundijong Open Quick Shear in a blinding 19.34 seconds.
In his only WA Quick Shear appearance this year, Mandurah’s Lou Brown beat out his long-time friend, the legendary Cartwright Terry.
It’s the second time Brown has edged out his mentor.
In 2019, Lou Brown scaled the ‘Everest of shearing’, breaking the world record for the most merino ewes shorn in eight hours. He managed to shear 497 sheep, 31 more than the previous record of 466, held by Terry for 16 years.
But at a sprightly 51 years of age, Cartwright Terry proved on Saturday he’s still a quick shear champion, beating out 37 other competitors to claim second prize.
“Back in his younger days he used to rule the quick shears,” organiser Tawai Howden said.
“So, it was a bit of nostalgia for everyone there.”
Shelford Wilcox, Jimmy Samuels, Jack Fagan and Ethan Harder rounded out the Top 6 prize winners.
Tawai said Perth’s only quick shear attracted a huge crowd this year; at times it was standing room only at the Mundijong Tavern, with many locals stopping by to have a gander.
“That was fantastic to see. This is all really about bringing the country to the city,” she said.
“And everyone gave rave reviews about our emcee Karl Langdon. He loved it too and has asked to come back.
“Honestly it was such a good night, and I want to say a big thankyou to all our sponsors, the committee and our supporters – everyone who came out to see it.
“I also want to thank the Wormall family – without them this wouldn’t have been possible.
“I can’t wait to do it all again next year.”
